Rupee falls by nine paise to 60.22 vs USD

The rupee on Friday fell by 10 paise to 60.23 in late morning deals
on fresh dollar demand from banks and importers amid the
US currency strengthening overseas. AP file photo
After a day's respite, the rupee on Friday declined by nine paise to 60.22 in volatile trade on fresh dollar demand from importers even as RBI possibly intervened to arrest the slide in the local currency.
The drop was also limited by fresh capital inflows and firm local stocks.
The rupee resumed at 60.06 a dollar from the previous close of 60.13 on the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market and reached a high of 60.00 as local stocks climbed and exporters sold dollars.
The rupee then dropped to a low of 60.59 amid renewed dollar demand from importers, a strong dollar overseas and late profit booking in stocks. The rupee regained some ground to close at 60.22, a decline of 0.15 per cent.
"Possibly, there was intervention from the Reserve Bank around the 60.58/59 level, which helped the rupee to recover," said Hemal Doshi, a currency strategist at Geojit Comtrade.
The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex, which added 229 points at mid-session, ended with a gain of 85 points, or 0.44 per cent.
The dollar index, consisting of six major global rivals, was up by 0.20 per cent after the European Central Bank and the Bank of England each indicated there were no plans to reduce stimulus immediately.
"The dollar rallied across the board yesterday after the dovish comments made by both the European Central Bank President Mario Draghi and new Bank of England Governor Mark Carney," said Pramit Brahmbhatt, CEO, Alpari Financial Services (India). "It extended its strength today also against other major currencies, forcing the rupee to depreciate."
On a weekly basis, the rupee extended its fall for the ninth straight time -- one of its longest losing streaks.
"The rupee was seen trading in the range of nearly 60 paise today. It was trading on a weaker note taking cues from the global factors where the Dollar index was seen trading above its one month high. Later, the rupee was seen gaining some strength against the US dollar as there was a selling pressure in the market," said Abhishek Goenka, Founder and CEO, India Forex Advisors.
Today's US Non-Farm Employment data will be very significant for the further trend in the US dollar and rupee, he added.
Meanwhile, premium for forward dollar declined further on sustained receipts by exporters.
Benchmark six-month forward dollar premium payable in December softened to 171-172-1/2 paise from Thursday's close of 172-1/2-174-1/2 paise.
Far-forward contracts maturing in June also eased to 348-350 paise from 349-1/2-351-1/2 paise.
RBI fixed the reference rate for the US dollar at 60.3395 and for the euro at 77.8085.
Rupee improved further against the pound sterling to 90.18 from previous close of 90.74 and also firmed up against the Japanese yen to 60.21 per 100 yen from 60.27.
However, bounced back against the euro to 77.56 from last close of 78.17.

Gold price falls to 2-month low on US Fed stimulus outlook

Gold price falls to 2-month low on US Fed stimulus outlook

Gold price fell for a fourth straight session on Thursday to its lowest level since a 15 percent plunge in mid-April, after the US Federal Reserve signalled it would slow the pace of bond purchases later this year.

A scale-back of the $85 billion monthly asset purchases is likely to weaken support for gold prices, already down about 20 percent this year due to rapid outflows from exchange-traded funds and slowing demand in top consumers, India and China.

Spot gold fell 1.6 percent to $1,328.75 an ounce by 0709 GMT, down more than 4 percent for the week. It fell to $1,322.79 earlier in the session - not far off the lows in mid-April when gold fell the most in 30 years.

"I wouldn't be in a rush to say it's the end of gold," said Amber MacKinnon, an analyst at Nomura Securities in Sydney.

"This is definitely a big turning point. But though we have seen some reasonable amount of stability in the US economy, there is still a long way to run."

Madhuri Dixit glides through intimate scenes with
 Naseeruddin Shah in
Dedh Ishqiya

For those who saw Abhishek Choubey's Ishqiya three years ago, the film's raw sexual energy between Vidya Balan and Arshad Warsi still remains vivid.

The news on the much-anticipated sequel Dedh Ishqiya is that Huma Qureshi who replaces Vidya Balan as Arshad Warsi's co-star, goes "much further" with Arshad in Dedh Ishqiya. According to a source close to the project, Huma and Arshad "have pulled out all stops" making Arshad's love-making scenes in Ishqiya look like "a teaser trailer, and foreplay before the actual act."

That's not all. Madhuri Dixit who makes a comeback in Dedh Ishqiya has also done some intimate scenes with her co-star Naseeruddin Shah, and done them without inhibitions.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and wife Gauri are going to be parents for the third time, according to a report published in Mid-Day paper.

SRK and Gauri, who already have a 15-year-old son Aryan and 13-year-old daughter Suhana, are expecting a baby boy through surrogacy, said the newspaper report.

According to the report published in the paper, it was Gauri Khan's decision to have a baby through surrogacy as she was keen on having a third child.

The report further says that Bollywood's IT couple SRK and Gauri consulted the same doctor that Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao had went to during their surrogacy.

According to another report published in DNA the child is due in the first week of July.

The report also said that Salman Khan's younger brother Sohail and wife Seema had their second child through surrogacy.

Shah Rukh and Gauri have been married for the past 22 years even before he made his Bollywood debut with Deewana in 1992.

Before making it big in Bollywood, SRK had started working in TV serials including the hitFauji.
SRK and Gauri are not the first couple to have a surrogate baby. Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao were the first B-town couple to have a baby boy through surrogacy.

In December 2011, Aamir Khan and Kiran announced the birth of their son, Azad Rao Khan through a surrogate mother.

Apple looking at bigger iPhone screens, multiple colours - sources

REUTERS - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) is exploring launching iPhones with bigger screens, as well as cheaper models in a range of colours, over the next year, said four people with knowledge of the matter, as it takes a cue from rival Samsung Electronics (005930.KS).
The moves, which are still under discussion, underscore how the California-based firm that once ruled the smartphone market is increasingly under threat from its aggressive South Korean competitor. Samsung has overtaken Apple in market share through the popularity of its bigger-screen Galaxy "phablets" and by flooding the market with a range of products at different prices.

Samsung opens new R&D facility in Nokia's backyard

Samsung opens new R&D facility in Nokia's backyard

Mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics is set to open a new research and development centre in Nokia's home town on Thursday, highlighting the Korean company's ascendancy over its once dominant Finnish rival.

Samsung's newest R&D facility, its first in the Nordic region, is located in Espoo, Finland, where Nokia has its headquarters. Details on staffing and investment plans are due to be unveiled later in the day.

The move follows the opening of R&D facilities in Finland by other technology firms including Huawei and Intel, which have sought to take advantage of the country's high concentration of engineers and software developers - many of whom previously worked at Nokia or its related businesses.

Nokia has had to cut back on its own resources in recent years, laying off thousands of employees and selling its glass and steel waterfront office building in Espoo and leasing it back to conserve cash.

Market data shows Samsung is now the leader in the global mobile phone market, a position previously held by Nokia. It has been particularly dominant in highly-profitable smartphones, shipping more units in the first quarter than the next four vendors combined.

MUMBAI - India said on Wednesday it was considering measures that would help stabilise the rupee after it hit an all-time low but the assurances are unlikely to be enough unless backed by concrete steps to revive inflows into the slowing economy.

Rupee likely to hit 58 vs dollar this week, say analysts

The rupee hit a record low of 57.76 against
the dollar  on Monday rising worries
about the country's rising
current account deficit.
NEW DELHI: The rupee hit a record low of 57.76 against the dollar on Monday rising worries about the country's rising current account deficit, even as dollar gained against major Asian currencies.

The rupee hit a fresh record low of 57.76 as dollar gained following disappointing data from China and slightly better-than-expected US jobs data, fueling expectations that the Federal Reserve might curb its asset purchases later this year.

According to analysts, foreign investors have been heavy sellers in recent weeks of Indian debt, which is worrisome for a country which depends heavily on foreign flows to financeits current account deficit and support its markets.

"Weakness in rupee makes it harder to finance India's current account deficit and makes imports costlier for India," Reuters said in a report.

According to analysts, the fall is largely triggered by broad gains in the dollar that is also hitting other emerging currencies such as the Japanese Yen over worries about a potential end to the U.S. stimulus programme.

According to analysts, dollar's longer-term bullish outlook is expected to remain intact as the Fed will eventually start scaling down its stimulus if jobs keep on adding to its kitty.

Most analysts expect dollar index to hit 88 levels by year-end and the outlook for rupee remains bearish with target of Rs 58-60 against US dollar.

The US 10 year bond yield is inching up higher day by day on the confirmation by the US Federal Reserve on tapering the quantative easing (QE). This is ultimately making the US bond yield to trade above 2 per cent.

"While on the other hand, the Indian Federal bond yield is trading lower at 7.2 per cent and is expected to lower down further as there is increasing speculation over RBI cutting theinterest rates in near future," India Forex Advisors said in a report.

"If that happens, this will further reduce the arbitrage opportunity for the foreign investors. As the returns drops, the more the pressure would exert on rupee," the report added.

We have collated views and recommendations from various experts on rupee and its future outlook:

Abhishek Goenka, Founder & CEO, India Forex Advisors
The rupee is currently on a free fall breaching the head and shoulder pattern at 55.20. The major reason that we foresee behind rupee depreciation is the rise in US treasury yield, which is leading to the unwinding of carry trade in USD/INR. The unwinding moves are very brutal and fast that's what we are seeing in rupee.

Going ahead, as long as the USD/INR is above 57.10, we expect the pair to move towards 58.00 in this week.

Shardul Kulkarni, senior technical analyst at Angel Broking
Last week, the equity market participants have finally been forced to take notice of the rupee. Despite all efforts by the government to reign in the trade deficit, the rupee continues to be a cause of concern.

We were also fortunate to get substantial inflows via FII investments. Despite of all these factors, the rupee is now trading almost near its all-time low. The consistent demand for the greenback is on account of the yellow metal. The technical outlook on the rupee suggests that 58 may soon be tested.
