India makes feeble recovery; Jan-March GDP up 4.8 percent

NEW DELHI - India's economic growth began a feeble recovery at the tail end of a 2012 fiscal year that saw the slowest expansion in a decade, providing little relief for a government heading into a busy election period dogged by graft scandals and criticism of its economic management.

I am shocked and disappointed: Sachin Tendulkar on fixing

New Delhi: Breaking his silence on the raging spot-fixing scandal, Sachin Tendulkar on Friday said that the developments of the last two weeks were "shocking and disappointing" and the faith reposed by the millions of fans in the game should be justified.

Tendulkar said the authorities must take sincere steps to get to the root of the issue and ensure that credibility of the game is restored.

The champion batsman, who retired from IPL after his side Mumbai Indians won the title recently, said as a cricketer he has always learnt to play in the true spirit of the game.

"It has always hurt me when the game of cricket is in the news for the wrong reasons. The developments in the last two weeks have been shocking and disappointing. As cricketers we are always taught to go out, fight hard, give our very best and play in the true spirit of the game," Tendulkar said in a statement.

The milestone man of Indian cricket said it was important that the authorities get to the root of the problem.

"During this difficult phase, I join every cricketer, from the boys in the maidans across the country to those who represent clubs, states and the country, who trust the authorities to take sincere steps to get to the root of the issue.

"The faith reposed by the millions of fans should be justified and we owe it to them to ensure that Indian cricket is all about pride and joy," the statement added.

Tendulkar's statement on the spot-fixing scandal assumes great importance since none of the current Indian cricketers have spoken on the issue, since it broke out about two weeks ago.
Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has steadfastly refused to speak on the scandal, apparently under a gag order from the BCCI.

Dhoni evaded questions on spot-fixing at the pre-departure press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday and also did the same at the media interaction in Birmingham yesterday ahead of Champions Trophy.

The only thing Dhoni said at the press conference in Birmingham was that Indian cricket's reputation was not "gone" and that some people were "slightly mentally weak" compared to others. He said that he will speak when the time was right.

With more and more cricket boards and state unit officials coming out in the open against BCCI President N Srinivasan's continuance over the last few days, it will be interesting to see whether more cricketers also start giving their views, taking a cue from Tendulkar.

Sugar decontrol: Mills for linking of cane and sugar prices

Sugar decontrol: Mills for linking of cane and sugar prices

"The cane prices would have to be linked to finished
product prices, " said Yatin Wadhwana,
managing director of Sucden India Private Limited said.
SINGAPORE: Sugar mill owners have called upon decontrol of sugar prices, seeking their fixation on the basis of processed sweetener.

"The cane prices would have to be linked to finished product prices," said Yatin Wadhwana, managing director of Sucden India Private Limited, on the sidelines of ongoing Kingsman Asia Pacific Sugar Conference

He was referring to the imbalance in current cane and sugar prices after partial decontrol measures were introduced early last month.

The measures will impact the mills' earnings as cane prices have gone up and sugar prices decreased, he said, adding the mills have to pay the fixed prices for the cane.

"The industry is in trouble as it has to pay a fixed price of cane," Wadhwana said.

He said the cane price in UP was Rs 2800/t with sugar recovery of 9 per cent, and in Maharashtra it was between Rs 2,300-Rs 2,800/t with sugar recovery of 10-12 per cent.

Sugar prices in India has dropped by over 10 per cent to RS 31,000/t ($ 560/t) recently due to surplus in supplies.

But mills were not able to export sugar as their domestic prices were still higher than in the international markets.

Mills' white sugar prices averaged $ 550-$ 560/t ex-mill while Brazil's offer was lower at $ 470/t free-on-board.

Comparatively, the mills' production costs were also high, ranging between Rs 3,000/t to Rs 5,000/t.

The mills were also expected to face sugar surplus in the domestic market in the coming months.

This year's production is estimated at 25 million tons, or over 8 per cent or 2 million tons above consumption demand, Wadhwana said.

Mills were expected to export 1 million tons between October-September 2012-13, while imports of raw sugar was expected at 1.5 million tons in the 8 months to May, 500,000 tons of which would be processed for local market and rest re-exported, according to Wadhwana.

The oversupply situation would likely further depress sugar prices in the market, said traders at the conference.

Mumbai girl Ananya wins bronze in World School Chess Championship

Nine-year-old Mumbai girl Ananya Gupta has claimed a bronze medal in the World School Chess championship held at Haldikki in Greece.

Ananya, a product of South Mumbai Chess Academy (SMCA), was ranked 7th with an ELO of 1564 in the tournament held between May 6-15.

She created waves by beating the much higher ranked Yvonne Beline of France on way to finishing third in the competition.

Her vigorous attitude was evident in this particular game, wherein, despite a "dead draw" situation she refused to settle for it, tricked her opponent and claimed the victory.

Ananya, who had clinched gold at the 9th Singapore Chess Festival earlier, won seven out of nine games to bag the bronze, Maharashtra Chess Association's joint secretary Nagesh Guttula said.

"I felt very calm and relaxed in Greece and I played my usual game", said Ananya about her performance.

She had trained for seven hours daily before the tournament with her coaches at SMCA and is now preparing for the Under 9 nationals.

Mother Dairy hikes milk prices up to Rs 3 per litre from Monday

Mother Dairy hikes milk prices up to Rs 3 per litre from Monday

Full cream milk will be dearer by Rs 3 per litre, while other
variants will be costlier by Rs 2 per litre. (AP)

Mother Dairy today announced an increase of up to Rs 3 per litre in milk prices in Delhi-NCR region from tomorrow, citing rise in input costs.

Full cream milk will be dearer by Rs 3 per litre, while other variants will be costlier by Rs 2 per litre.
One litre of full cream milk (poly pack) will now cost Rs 42, toned milk (poly pack) Rs 32, token milk Rs 30, double toned Rs 28. However, prices of skimmed milk have been kept unchanged at Rs 22 per litre, Mother Dairy said in a statement.

Mother Dairy, the largest supplier of milk in the Delhi-NCR, sells more than 30 lakh litres per day (both loose and poly-pack) in the region.

"Price hike has been necessitated due to significant increase in raw material costs (farmer prices) by almost 10 per cent over last year, power tariffs, petroleum prices and other costs," the company said.
Prices have been increased to maintain viability of operations and to be able to adequately cater to the growing liquid milk demand of the consumers in NCR, it added.

Early this month, Amul had increased milk prices by Rs 2 per litre.

The company in statement said it "passes on 75-76 per cent of the consumer price to rural farmers. This may probably be one of the best and most efficient means of ensuring inclusive growth".

Delhi’s iconic Signature Bridge to be ready in 2014

Delhi’s iconic Signature Bridge to be ready in 2014

New Delhi  :  The capital, which has so far basked in the glory of historic monuments and edifices built by the Mughals and Edward Lutyens, will boast of an iconic structure of its own in the form of the Signature Bridge – a cable-supported steel bridge spanning the Yamuna river – which is set to be ready by September 2014.

And an added attraction will be a recreation park, complete with water sports, boating, walkways and restaurants, developed on a one-kilometre stretch adjoining the bridge in east Delhi’s Wazirabad area.
Coming up 600 metres downstream from the Wazirabad barrage, the Signature Bridge will be 150 metres-tall – double the height of the Qutub Minar. When ready, it will connect Khajuri Khas intersection on the east bank of the Yamuna to the outer Ring Road on the west bank.
“It will be a bow-shaped, cable-stayed structure which is entirely made of steel. Around 80 percent of the work has been completed as the foundation work is over. Pillars have to be erected,” a chief engineer of the Delhi government told IANS.
“This will be a landmark structure in the capital. The bridge will be thrown open to the public by September 2014,” a Delhi government official said.
“The structure will have an asymmetrical central pylon which will support the deck with cables,” said the chief engineer, who preferred not to be identified.
The ambitious bridge project was announced in 2004 to decongest traffic.
Asked why it was taking so long to complete the project, a Delhi government official said: “In 2002, many saplings were planted in the area. Constructing the bridge required destroying all the plants. We had to take clearance; only then work could be started.”
An added attraction will be a viewing gallery right at the top of the central pylon to give tourists a bird’s eye view of the area.

Sanjay Dutt to follow uniform jail routine, but stay away from other inmates

Sanjay Dutt to follow uniform jail routine, but stay away from other inmates

For security reasons, Sanjay Dutt will be kept in a separate guarded cell at Yerawada Central jail, where he was brought early on Wednesday morning. But, he will follow the same routine as that of any other inmate, said jail officials. Related: Dutt's life at Yerawada begins as prisoner no 16656

Dutt, who will serve the remaining three and a half years of his five-year sentence in the 1993 Mumbai serial blast case, was brought here along with Yusuf Nalwala from Arthur Road jail around 7 am on Wednesday.

Dutt was kept in a separate cell in Arthur Road jail and will be lodged in a separate security cell here as well. Yogesh Desai, the superintendent of Yerawada central prison said, "From today morning, he started his routine like any other convict. Though his routine in the jail will be same as all others, he will spend most of his time away from the other inmates. This is being done because there are many other convicts."

A normal day of a convict starts very early in the morning, Desai said. By around 7.30 am, they are served breakfast and then they go about their daily routine, which ranges from carpentry, leather work and tailoring. They can also spend time in the library. They are served lunch at 11.30 am. Then they go back to work and continue till around 4.30. Convicts also work in the kitchen and help the staff keep the premises clean. "Sanjay Dutt's work in prison has not been decided yet," said Desai.

As per the court order, he will be allowed home-made food. The authorities have also allowed his family to send him a pillow, mattress and medicines from home. "We are yet to go through the court order in detail."

7 of family killed in Ghaziabad

7 of family killed in Ghaziabad
Dipankar Ghose : Ghaziabad

Police said entry to the house was friendly and not
all jewellery was taken. Gajendra yadav

A family of seven was wiped out in Ghaziabad, with all members found murdered in their home on Wednesday morning.
Police identified those killed as Satish Goel (62), his wife Manju (60), son Sachin (40), daughter Rekha (38), and three grandchildren — Medha (13), Honey (11) and Aman (10).
Though the house was found ransacked, police doubt that it was a case of robbery gone wrong and are probing personal or professional enmity angles.

The family lived in a two-floor house in Ghanta Ghar area.
Senior officers said three bodies were found in a corridor of the house, two were in one bedroom and two in another.

Neighbours called police after they noticed that the main door of the house was ajar.
Bhavesh Kumar Singh, Inspector General of Police (Meerut Range), said: "It seems the victims were killed by a sharp instrument. Prima facie, it does not seem any shots were fired, but it will become clear after the post-mortem reports come in. The motive is not clear yet. We have formed various teams and are working on several leads."

Police said the entry to the house seemed "friendly".

"There seem to be no signs of forced entry. After talking to neighbours we got to know that there was a wedding house nearby and the DJ was playing loud music. It is possible that the music drowned any screams for help," an officer said.

Police said Satish was a businessman with interests in property and food products.
"Robbery is a possible, but unlikely motive. Relatives told us that Satish was involved in five upcoming building projects in Ghaziabad.

These required daily cash transactions in lakhs of rupees. His son was also involved in the same business. It seems he was due to have a kidney transplant next week, so there was money in the house for that as well. Some of the cupboards in the house look ransacked," an officer said.

Salman Khan resumes Mental, sans South fighters

Salman Khan resumes Mental,
sans South fighters

READ MORE Salman Khan|Dharmesh Tiwari|Bollywood

The Lavasa shoot of Salman Khan starrer Mental, which had come to a grinding halt last month, will finally resume next week, all thanks to Salman.

Filming at the hill city had come to a standstill because of the impasse between action artistes from Mumbai and those from Chennai and Hyderabad over what the southern fighters perceived as inadequate representation and pay vis-a-vis their Bollywood counter parts. The disgruntled artistes had approached FEFSI (Film Employees' Federation of South India) but even that hadn't helped, and they had returned to Chennai, abandoning the action schedule mid-way.

While Salman and producer, brother Sohail, lost around 12 days of shooting and incurred losses to the tune of Rs 25 crore in the interim, Salman has now decided not to work with the southern fighters at all.

A friend of the actor told TOI: "Salman has decided to cancel their contracts. It is doubtful they will be given credits as they have hardly done any work on the film."

The gripe of the south-based fighters had been that there were only three of them for every seven from Mumbai, and that they were being paid 50 percent less than their Bollywood peers.

However, FWICE (Federation of Western India Cine Employees) President, Dharmesh Tiwaricame out in support of Salman's decision saying:" As per the All India Film Employees Confederation (AIFEC), 70 per cent of the fighters have to be local (in this case from the Hindi film industry) and 30 per cent from the region of the fight master (the south in this case). The demand by the southern fighters for 50 per cent representation is unreasonable and just not acceptable. They have to adhere to the rules. I had a meeting with Sohail sometime ago, and I don't think Salman's decision is wrong."

Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro - launched

Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro with quad-core processor launched for Rs. 17,290

Samsung has officially launched a new quad-core variant of its mid-range Android phablet, Galaxy Grand at a price of Rs. 17,290.

However, the phone has been selling online since last week. The dual-SIM phone is being sold as the Galaxy Grand Quattro and is selling on online retail stores including on Flipkart, HomeShop18 and Indiatimes for Rs. 16,570.

The Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and has 1GB of RAM. It runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and runs Samsung's TouchWiz UI layer on top. It also offers Motion UI that allows users to control the phone when a certain move is detected. For instance flipping the phone can mute it while receiving a call.

Unlike the Grand Duos, which has a 5-inch screen, this smartphone sports a 4.7-inch TFT display with a resolution of 480x800 pixels. The phone's camera has also been downgraded if one compares it to the Galaxy Grand Duos' camera. It sports a 5-megapixel rear camera with auto-focus and a VGA front facing camera, while the Grand Duos comes with an 8-megapixel rear shooter and a 2-megapixel front camera. It comes with 8GB internal memory expandable up to 32GB via microSD card. The Grand Quattro has a 2,000mAh battery.

Announcing the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro, Vineet Taneja, Country Head, Samsung Mobile, said, "Galaxy Grand Quattro is a revolutionary device that combines powerful performance with smart multi tasking and advanced usability .Following the success of the Galaxy Grand introduced in January this year , we are confident that the Galaxy Grand Quattro will meet the needs of consumers looking for the 'Grand' experience in a slightly smaller display."

As a special introductory offer, Samsung is offering a Digital Wallet of Rs. 3,000 valid for 90 days applicable on Games, with the phone.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy Grand Duos (Review|Pictures) in January for Rs. 21,500. While Samsung's marketing push has ensured that the phone doesn't go unnoticed, it's facing tough competition from phones from Indian handset makers including the Micromax Canvas HD which boast of quad-core processors at a price point much lesser than that of the Grand Duos. So the launch of the Grand Quattro looks like a move to counter these. It's interesting to note that the Galaxy Grand Quattro was internationally launched in April as the Galaxy Win and was even listed with the same name on sites such as Infibeam.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro specifications
  • 4.7-inch WVGA TFT display
  • 1.2GHz quad-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB of internal storage, expandable up to 32GB
  • 5-megapixel rear camera, VGA front camera
  • Android 4.1.2
  • 2,000mAh battery
  • Dual-SIM (dual-standby) option
